Starting a Youth Board Inside an Established Organization

Context

The Elmhurst Indian American Association (EIAA) is an established community organization. Its main board has been run by adults for years, organizing cultural, service, and community events. What it didn’t have was a program built specifically for its younger members. Gabriel didn’t found EIAA — he founded something to fill that specific gap.

What Gabriel Founded

The EIAA Junior Board: a youth board that operates underneath the existing adult board rather than replacing it. Gabriel founded it and is now its president. Founding and leading the Junior Board is his; the events themselves are Junior Board work, done together with other members, in support of the main board’s programming.

Getting It Running

That meant deciding how the Junior Board would meet and what kind of events it would run before any of it actually happened — the same kind of up-front, define-the-rules-first work behind the Algorithmic Trading Research System, just applied to people and events instead of code. Then came the sponsorship outreach and coordination for its first two fundraising events: a golf outing and a pickleball social.

Result

Together, those two events helped raise more than $6,000 in sponsorship and community support — the Junior Board’s first fundraising results since it was founded.

Reflection

Starting something new inside an organization that already has its own way of doing things is a different problem than starting one from scratch. The Junior Board’s structure had to fit alongside a board that had already been meeting for years, not replace it or compete with it.
